From March 23 to May 4, we are reading Beneath a Scarlet Sky, a book by Mark Sullivan. On May 4 at 7pm CT, we will host a discussion to share our reading experiences. Register to join the call!
At our May 11 Solo Pro meeting, a panel of freelance AWC members will answer questions about what it’s like to strike out on your own and build a business or consulting practice. Topics will include technical writing, writing and editing in journalism, consulting, training, and graphic design.
If you are in the communications industry as a freelancer, consultant or business owner, or heading up a small communications department in a company or non-profit, AWC Seattle’s Solo Pros affinity group can provide expertise, support, and skill development to help you navigate today’s professional environment. Members of Solo Pros include writers, editors, graphic designers, tech specialists, marketing and communications strategists and tacticians with years of experience and strong networks. Solo Pros currently meets virtually on the second Wednesday of each month, at 10 a.m. Pacific. Each month we have a topic of interest to our members and in the future we will include follow-up discussions after AWC speaker events. *Note that Solo Pros will meet monthly via Zoom (until further notice). Register today to join us on Wednesday, May 18 for “Deliberative Dialogues: New program really has people talking!” Check-in starts at 11:45 and the event takes place from 12 to 1 p.m.
The Deliberative Dialogue program launched at Illinois State University (ISU) in 2020 and has grown exponentially since then. This model of conversation removes polarizing positions and one-sided lectures by simply asking participants to investigate specific solutions to an issue through the help of an issue guide and facilitator. By equipping individuals with the necessary skills to engage in meaningful conversation, Deliberative Dialogues foster democratic participation and an appreciation for finding solutions to society’s biggest and most complex challenges.
Harriett Steinbach and Joshua Crockett, both from ISU’s Center for Civic Engagement, will walk us through the history of the program, its purpose in depolarizing the political climate, and how we can get involved.
